Pop in your headphones for Pride.
Drawing America: US@250 is a season of art installations, programs, and partnerships that honors those who have imagined a more equitable future and fought for the promise of our democracyâand those who continue to do so today.
As part of Drawing America, weâve put together audio tours that examine our collections through the lenses of LGBTQ+ liberation, civil rights, immigrant experiences, the womenâs movement, climate justice, and Indigenous perspectives (coming soon). Pop in your headphones to take an intimate look at iconic artworks and consider the people, movements, and collective histories that have defined American culture.
The tours feature insights from artists, curators, educators, writers, and more. The LGBTQ+ liberation tour includes the following reflection from Laval Bryant-Quigley, Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships at the Brooklyn Museum:
So weâre looking at Love is Love by Robert Peterson. I see two people straddling and lying in a very loving, intimate way. I see the gray thatâs in the shadows of their skin. The beautiful browns, too, that make the melanin. The vibrancy of the yellow thatâs draped in the back. And I see this level of gaze that almost draws you in. You feel a little intrusive coming into a sacred space, an intimate space, but also the gaze and the angle that youâre atâitâs almost like theyâre lying down and youâre almost standing up looking down toward them.
I also feel like itâs letting you in without spectacle, and I think thatâs really powerful. I think itâs important to see that level of intimacy you can have in everyday life, in every different space. People need to have that freedom. We need to have that acceptance as well. We need to gaze back with understanding . . . letting people [be] free to be themselves and express themselves, and to love in the way that they deem is needed.
